Where this information comes from
Spacing, height, sun and sowing method come from OpenFarm (rescued crop records), released under CC0 1.0. These records come from a community wiki and were written largely for northern hemisphere gardeners, so we keep a selected list of crops and leave out figures that look wrong.
Sowing depth, germination and time to harvest come from Australian state agriculture guides where one covers the crop: Queensland DPI grower kits, NSW Agriculture Agfacts, the Northern Territory's Top End sweet potato guide and an Agriculture WA farmnote. Where they don't, we use Penn State Extension's seed planting guide and The Seed Collection's sowing guides.
Sowing months by zone are based on The Seed Collection's planting charts, compared with local gardening group and government calendars. Each zone says whether it matched. Where they clearly disagree, our editors check the months before they're shown.
Notes about shared plots and the articles are written by PlotHive.
We write crop descriptions ourselves and check them against Wikipedia. Each crop page links to the article we used.
Frost dates
Frost areas are calculated by PlotHive from the ACORN-SAT daily temperature records, 1991-2020: Bureau of Meteorology, © Commonwealth of Australia. They're regional estimates, and a frost hollow or hillside can differ by weeks. Frost classes and time to harvest come from Colorado State University Extension.
Using this guide
This is general information, not professional advice. Your garden's rules, your state's weed and biosecurity laws and your seed packet all take priority. Any months shown apply to Australia only.
